PFL stands for Pre-Fade Listen.
PFL allows a channel to be listened to through the iPad’s monitor speakers without needing that channel to be heard in the main output. This is useful for checking a source before it is live.
For example, a channel might be turned off in the mix or its fader might be down, but with PFL enabled it can still be monitored locally. This makes it possible to confirm that audio is present and sounding correct before bringing it into the Show.
PFL is a standard audio mixer feature, and in Mavis Studio it is available on the full audio desk above each channel.
When PFL is active, monitoring is shifted to the selected pre-fade source. This means the iPad is no longer simply monitoring the main mix. It is monitoring that specific channel instead.
PFL is especially useful during setup, troubleshooting, and live preparation, where a source needs to be checked without being put on air.
It is best thought of as a listening tool rather than a mixing tool.
